South Fulton Medical Center to invest $8 million in South Metro Atlanta. Certificate of Need approved for Emergency Department expansion.

East Point, GA – South Fulton Medical Center received final approval for its Certificate of Need (CON) from the Georgia Department of Community Health on December 24, 2002 to invest $8 million to enhance services to residents of the south Metro Atlanta area with the expansion of the hospital's emergency department.

The proposed project also involves renovations to the emergency department that will expand it beyond its current size to more than 14,500 square feet. South Fulton's emergency department is significantly undersized to accommodate the volume of patients treated there each year.

"Although operational and personnel changes have been designed to decrease wait times for the emergency department, this expansion from 17 to 26 examination rooms is designed to allow us to go even further to help ensure that our patients do not have to wait for much needed care. The new facility also will allow patients from our community to be treated in more comfort. Like our recently approved long-term acute care facility, this emergency department expansion is just one more sign of South Fulton's commitment to deliver the best possible care to our community," said Andrew Agwunobi, M.D., M.B.A., chief executive officer.

South Fulton Medical Center plans to break ground in the first half of 2003 with completion in 2004.
