Capsule endoscopy is one of the newest GI diagnostic procedures available at South Fulton Medical Center. In this procedure, physicians can examine and visualize the small intestine by means of a vitamin-sized disposable miniature video camera that the patient swallows. As the capsule moves through the gastrointestinal tract, the physician can examine the lining of the small intestine for bleeding, Crohn’s disease, malabsorption and intestinal tumors.
Gastrointestinal disease affects millions of people each year in the United States. Diseases of the small intestine are difficult to diagnosis due to limitations of diagnostic tools. Now with capsule endoscopy, images of the small intestine can be obtained to help diagnose and treat gastrointestinal diseases.
