Maternity Services

Having a baby is a life-changing experience.  Whether you’re a first-time mother or expecting an addition to your family, it is important that you have confidence in the hospital where your child will make his or her entrance into the world.
At South Fulton Medical Center, we’ve been delivering babies for more than 45 years and offer a combination of medical skill, advanced technology and family-centered care. Our team of physicians and registered nurses - including on-staff anesthesiologists, neonatologist, perinatologists, lactation consultants and nurse midwives - are committed to fulfilling your expectations.

Our Maternity program provides:

• Tours of the Women's Center in English and Spanish.
• Comfortable labor/delivery/recovery (LDR) rooms that allow mothers to deliver and recover in the same room.
• A surgical suite designed especially for Cesarean births.
• Private bathrooms.
• The choice of natural childbirth or any available form of anesthesia.
• The choice of water birth (must be scheduled prior to delivery).
• A postpartum (post-delivery) unit with homelike, comfortable private rooms.
• In room nurturing of your newborn.
• An antepartum (pre-delivery) unit for women who have complications during pregnancy and require hospitalization or prenatal testing.
• An on-staff perinatologist who specializes in high-risk pregnancies and births.
• Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), which provides full-spectrum care for newborns—including acutely ill and pre-term infants.
• A full-time neonatologist and a staff of neonatal nurses and other neonatal professionals.
• Personal nursing care throughout your labor to support you and your family.
• A range of childbirth education classes.
• Breast feeding education from our Support Team.

Labor & Delivery
Our spacious, newly renovated LDR suites combine the amenities of home with the sophisticated medical care you and your baby deserves. No matter how the birth of your baby unfolds, our nurses will be there to guide and assist you. Our medical team is with you from the beginning to support you and your family through the birth process. And, each LDR suite is equipped with fetal monitoring that is viewed at a central nurses’ station.

When it’s time to deliver your baby, you remain in the comfort of your private LDR suite. If you require pain relief, South Fulton Medical Center has around-the-clock anesthesia coverage for those needing regional anesthetic during labor (such as an epidural). If a Caesarean section is required, the procedure can be performed in a surgical suite right on our Women’s Unit.

After the Birth of your Baby
Following delivery and the initial recovery period, you and your baby are transferred to a private room on the Mother-Baby Unit to continue your recovery. Each room has been designed with your comfort in mind – from a wooden bassinet for baby, a rocking chair for mom and a sleeper sofa large enough to double as a bed for dad or a family member, plus a private bath and a TV/VCR and stereo system. Rooming-in with the baby is highly encouraged to promote effective bonding; however our 24-hour nursery can care for your baby when you need to rest.

Here, our mother-baby nurses and lactation counselors help families adjust to their new roles as mom recovers from childbirth.
