Intensive Care Unit and Coronary Care Unit

The Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and Coronary Care Unit (CCU) at South Fulton Medical Center provide a concentration of skills, equipment, and facilities for specialized medical and nursing care for the critically ill patient.

The ICU is for patients who require continuous, comprehensive, and detailed intensive care because of the critical nature of the patient's disease or illness. The CCU is similar, but focused on the needs of individuals recovering from heart attack and other cardiac conditions, or an acute stroke. Both units employ a multi-disciplinary approach with in-house consultations with nutritional services, pharmacy, physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy, respiratory therapy and social services when appropriate to meet the patient’s needs.

Patient care is managed by the patient’s attending physicians, South Fulton Medical Center’s hospitalist team (physicians who exclusively treat hospitalized patients) and specially trained registered nurses.  The professional nursing staff are certified in advanced cardiac life support, have completed advanced training in stroke care, and other intensive care treatments that are required by severely ill or injured adult patients.

Visitor Guidelines for Critical Care Areas:

Family and friends are an important part of any patient’s recovery. However, the patients in our critical care units need periods of uninterrupted rest so that they can conserve their strength and receive the extra care they need. To make their recovery as comfortable as possible, we ask that you follow these guidelines:

• Please limit the number of visitors.
• Flowers, plants, food and other personal items are not permitted in the patient’s room except those items that are used for personal hygiene.
• Children should not visit patients in the critical care areas. Exceptions may be made for extraordinary circumstances, but please consult with the patient’s nurse.
• If possible, designate one person from your family to serve as the primary contact for others.
• Visitation is restricted between the hours of 7 a.m. to 8 a.m. and from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Our goal is to help your loved one receive the best possible care. If you have questions, please ask.
